Crops
Almost two-thirds of Denmark’s area is agricultural land. The most important crops in Denmark are wheat and barley.
The contribution of agriculture
Agriculture in Denmark has witnessed a rapid technological development. The food sector’s direct and indirect contribution to income formation was estimated at 110.6 billion Danish kroner in 2015 which is 5.6 % of GDP.
Food export
Denmark has a population of 5.7 million inhabitants, but the food production is high enough to feed 15 million people. That is why most products are exported. The agricultural sector contributes by 25 % to the total Danish export of goods. The main markets are Germany, the UK, Sweden and China and the main products are pork, fish and dairy products.
Pigs
Denmark is globally known for its production of pigs and processing of pork meat. The sector has increased over the years because of a high degree of specialization. Overall the productivity has almost doubled over the last three decades and the total pig production in Denmark is 12.8 million per year.
Organic farming
Organic agriculture and foods are very popular in Denmark. 7 % of Danish farmland is cultivated organically, and Danish consumers buy more organic food than any other Europeans. In organic animal husbandry, animals are ensured surroundings that allow them to express their natural behavior, plenty of space, daylight and access to outdoor areas.
Horticulture
The Danish horticultural production consists mainly of open air production mainly bound for the Danish market. The produce is mainly apples and is recognized for its low level of pesticides. The greenhouse production located mainly in Fyn, is predominated by pot plants.

Denmark is one of the world’s oldest monarchies, currently ruled by Queen Margrethe II since 1972, and its democratic parliament, Folketinget, represents the people.
Danish is the official language, though English is widely spoken, especially in urban areas. The country retains its currency, the Danish Kroner, and credit cards with PINs are a common mode of payment.
