Health insurance
On the first day of your employment your employer must register you at the public health insurance fund, the “Österreichische Gesundheitskasse”.
“Österreichische Gesundheitskasse” is the social insurance institution in Austria for employees. Each federal state has an office of the Österreichische Gesundheitskasse.
Registration at “Österreichische Gesundheitskasse”.
Your employer must give you a written document with your registration at “Österreichische Gesundheitskasse". You must make sure that the documentation shows the correct working hours according to your working contract.
There is full social insurance protection, which means that you have financial protection for illness, accident, unemployment and pension.
Exceptions
If your monthly wage is less than 460,66 € (valid amount in 2020), you only have insurance for accidents, but at your own charge you can optional request also insurance for illness and pension at the “Österreichische Gesundheitskasse”.
Income Tax
The rate of your income tax depends on the taxable income you received in a calendar year.
Your employer must pay a rate of income tax for his employees. Furthermore, the employee pays a tax which is deducted directed from the gross salary.
Taxes and social insurance contributions are deducted from your gross pay and your employer transfers the contribution to the relevant institutions (finance office, social insurance institution, staff provision fund).
